Oxygen (O2) sensor codes
Oxygen sensors let the computer fine-tune the fuel mixture. When one reads slow, biased or stuck, the fuel control suffers and economy drops. Before condemning a sensor, rule out an exhaust leak near it and a real lean or rich condition — a healthy front sensor should swing up and down several times a second at 2,500 rpm.
Diagnose before extended driving.
Common causes
- Failed O2 sensor
- Exhaust leak near the sensor
- Wiring chafed on the exhaust
- Actual fuel mixture problem (check trims)
First checks
- Watch the sensor at 2,500 rpm: a narrow-band front sensor should switch 0.1–0.9 V several times a second
- Check the heater circuit resistance
- Rule out a real lean/rich condition using fuel trims
System: Fuel & air metering. This is general guidance for the generic OBD-II codes in this group; always confirm against the service information for your specific vehicle.
