Mass air flow (MAF) sensor codes
The mass air flow sensor tells the computer how much air the engine is breathing, which sets the fuel. A contaminated element, an air leak between the sensor and the throttle body, or a restricted filter make it read low; wiring faults make it erratic. Comparing the sensor's grams-per-second reading with engine load and MAP shows whether it's believable.
Diagnose before extended driving.
Common causes
- Contaminated MAF sensor element
- Air leak between MAF and throttle body
- Restricted air filter
- MAF wiring/connector
First checks
- Compare MAF g/s with calculated load and MAP
- Check intake ducting after the MAF for cracks
- Clean the MAF with sensor-safe cleaner only
